Making Sh*t Up

Posted: 2008-07-23

Over on the Daily Kos there is an article about the "huge scandal" that is currently "rocking" Alaska.

They are referring to Gov. Palin's recent decision to fire the public safety commissioner.

There are all sorts of claims (most made by the commissioner himself) that this is "payback" because he wouldn't fire a trooper that was formerly married to Gov. Palin's sister. What nobody seems to be noticing, however, is that Palin complained about this officer BEFORE she became governor and has not asked the commissioner to do anything concerning this case SINCE she became governor.

Next, people are also ignoring the fact that commissioners serve at the whim of the governor. They can be fired at will for no reason. Palin could give any commissioner the boot simply because she had a bad hair day.

SoOOOOooooo... if there was any animosity between her and this commissioner, why the hell WOULD she keep him around?

This is not a scandal. This is a mudslinging fest. Palin is well within her legal rights to fire the commissioner.

We may not like it but there is no scandal here. This is perfectly legal. If anything, the former commissioner is being a whiny ass. He knew the tenuous nature of a commissioner's position with respect to the governor. He should have seen this coming a long way off.

A New Time Sink Website to Explore

Posted: 2008-07-23

One of my friends recently turned me on to www.goodreads.com. The site is really cool if you like reading. It is great for finding new books to read and for discussing books you are reading or have read. You can keep tabs on what I am reading by watching the little goodreads widget I have in the right-hand menu over there. The latest book I've read appears first in the list.

As the title says, the site is a real time sink. Don't go there expecting to spend less than an hour... it really drags you in.

Thanks Collin!

One More Down, Three to Go

At the end of last week, the indictment against Sen. Cowdery was announced, bringing the total of indicted state legislators to four (Kohring, Kott, Weyrauch, and now Cowdery). The only state legislator still at large is Ben Stevens. He is obviously "Senator B" in Cowdery's indictment, which means he is squarely in the DOJ's sights. But he is not the only one.

Two thirds of our national congressional delegation are also in those same sights. Senator Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young are also under investigation regarding this whole VECO affair (as well as other shenanigans). Let's hope they all get theirs.

More Bigotry

An article posted on the KARE 11 TV site tells of three teenage boys who are not going to be able to attend their own graduation because they brought a confederate flag to school.

Now, racism aside, this article caught my attention because of the sorry state of education that these boys have. Take a peep at the following quotes illustrating the logic these boys used to defend their actions:

"We're all big fans of the Dukes of Hazard," said Dan Fredin, who was suspended, along with Joe Snyder and Justin Thompson. "It's just us showing we have our own style and we aren't going to conform to whatever anyone else thinks."

--Okay, first off, after admitting you are a Dukes of Hazard fan, it is pretty hard to then claim "they aren't conforming" to something. Either they are fans or they are supporters of the confederate south, either way, they are conforming to the mindset of a very large (and mentally-challenged) segment of our society.

On to the next quote, which is even better:

They say they show the flag as a sign of rebellion, not racism.

"The confederate army was in rebellion to the U.S. Army who were about money and power," Fredin said. "We never took it as racial or anything like that."

So not only do they not know what the Civil War was about, they also didn't know on which side the old, moneyed interests (plantation owners) were aligned (with the South). The money that was being fought over in the Civil War was the large fortunes controlled by the very few in the South, where they used slave labor, rather than industrial machines (the North) to produce their wealth.

The article includes a picture of the youths... never guess what race they are.
